Ham Shepherd's Pie

This is a dish that will undoubtedly please children: mashed potatoes baked in the oven, hiding a layer of ham in its center. Simply irresistible!

Instructions

  • 1.   Cook the potatoes in salted boiling water.
  • 2.   Prepare a béchamel sauce with 20g of butter, flour, and 20cl of milk: melt the butter, add the flour and stir.
    Gradually pour in the milk while whisking, season with salt and pepper, and let thicken over low heat.
  • 3.   Peel and mash the potatoes, adding 30g of butter, the remaining milk, an egg, salt, and pepper. Cut the ham into cubes.
  • 4.   Mix the mashed potatoes, béchamel sauce, ham, and half of the grated cheese. Season with pepper and pour into a buttered gratin dish. Cover with the remaining cheese and a few knobs of butter.
  • 5.   Bake in the oven at 200°C (392°F) for about 5 minutes, until golden and bubbly.

  • 100 g of cooked ham
  • 1 egg
  • 100 g of grated emmental
  • 30 cl of milk
  • 70 g of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of wheat flour
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 pinch of pepper

    Very good, however, I modified the recipe a bit. I didn't use béchamel sauce, but instead sautéed onions and shallots. I let them cool, then I chopped the ham into small pieces using a Tupperware container and mixed it with the onions and shallots. Next, in my dish, I layered mashed potatoes, then the mixture, and then more mashed potatoes. It was excellent.
